Additional nominees for Interior are announced

The President has nominated additional candidates for leadership positions at the Department of Interior who will be critical to implementing his climate, conservation, and equity priorities. Tracy Stone-Manning was nominated by President Biden to lead the Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Land Management (BLM). Stone-Manning has held several senior positions in government and the nonprofit sectors, most recently as the National Wildlife Federation’s senior advisor on public lands. Bryan Newland was nominated to serve as Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs. Newland has served as principal deputy assistant secretary for Indian Affairs since February 22, recently served as Tribal President for the Bay Mills Indian Community (Ojibwe), and previously served at the Department of the Interior from 2009-2012.

Jamie Williams, president of The Wilderness Society said:

“Tracy Stone-Manning is an exceptional pick to lead the BLM at this extraordinary moment. We expect she will be an advocate for rebuilding BLM’s professional ranks and restoring the agency’s integrity and morale. I believe she will ensure that public lands are managed to benefit everyone, and are neither dominated by a single use nor controlled by a powerful few.

“Bryan Newland is another well-qualified choice to provide leadership at the Department of the Interior. Interior needs strong leaders like Bryan who will respect Tribal sovereignty and federal trust and treaty responsibilities, and prioritize the health and prosperity of Native communities. We believe that working with Secretary Haaland, Newland will make strides in healing the wounds inflicted by generations of injustice.

“We enthusiastically support these appointments. The Senate should move quickly to approve these candidates for their important positions.”
