The Bureau of Land Management has issued a 60-day comment period extension on the draft Rock Springs Resource Management Plan, which will guide management and protection of natural and cultural resources, recreation and energy uses across 3.6 million acres of public land in southwestern Wyoming. The plan’s comment period now closes on January 17, 2024. Additionally, Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon announced that he intends to use this extra time to host University of Wyoming-facilitated workshops for those with interests in this planning area.
The following statement is from Julia Stuble, Wyoming Senior Manager for The Wilderness Society:
“We’re pleased to see productive engagement on the substance of the draft plan from Wyoming’s elected leaders after weeks of insults and inflammatory rhetoric. The core purpose of a public comment period is constructive analysis and sharing new information from affected communities. It will be helpful to have the Governor’s Office contribute by hosting workshops to gather feedback that can help the agency make the most informed decision about this incredible area. The 60-day extension also provides an opportunity for the Governor’s Office and the Bureau of Land Management to reach out to Tribal Nations for government-to-government consultation to be sure all feedback is being heard and included. This is a chance for all of us—in Wyoming and across the nation--to share our perspectives about the special lands, waters, wildlife and energy resources we rely on from these public lands.”
