Nationwide initiative aims to get one million kids outdoors to play and heal
WASHINGTON D.C (June 24, 2026) — The Wilderness Society is proud to support the One Million Kids Outdoors (1MKO) initiative, a nationwide effort to get more kids outside, experience the health benefits of nature and reconnect with the natural world. As screens take up more of their daily life, many young people are losing touch with the outdoors and connections to green spaces. Led by the Outdoors Alliance for Kids (OAK), this campaign aims to get one million kids outside through local outings and partnerships by June 2027.
Tracy Stone-Manning, President of The Wilderness Society, remarked:
“Every child should have the chance to feel the joy, wonder and freedom that time outside provides, which is why The Wilderness Society is proud to support the launch of the One Million Kids Outdoors initiative. Whether climbing, hiking, biking, fishing or just playing among the trees, time outdoors connects children to the clean air, parks and wild places that help them feel part of something bigger.”
Children today spend less time outdoors than any generation before. According to OAK, they spend only four to seven minutes a day in unstructured playtime outside, but more than seven hours on screens.
This national campaign encourages action through storytelling, advocacy and direct support to help every child enjoy, heal and play in nature. Protecting public lands for future generations also means opening more doors and creating meaningful pathways for all people to step outside and belong there.
