Parliamentarian strips sales mandate that drew furious and bipartisan outcry across the U.S.

NOTE: This content refers to the version of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee’s budget reconciliation bill that was leaked to media on June 14, 2025, and later confirmed by Democrats on the committee. Though the Senate parliamentarian advised removal of this proposal from the bill on procedural grounds, new bill text may be forthcoming.

WASHINGTON D.C. (June 24, 2025) — Sen. Mike Lee’s (R-UT) provision to mandate the sale of millions of acres of public lands has reportedly been stripped from the Senate budget reconciliation package on procedural grounds by the Senate parliamentarian.

Tracy Stone-Manning, president of The Wilderness Society, made the following statement about the news:

“This is a victory for the American public, who were loud and clear: Public lands belong in public hands, for current and future generations alike. We trust the next politician who wants to sell off public lands will remember that people of all stripes will stand against that idea. Our public lands are not for sale.”
