Wilderness Society statement on Secretary Haaland's trip to El Paso to learn more about Castner Range

Interior Secretary Deb Haaland visited Castner Range in El Paso, Texas today to meet with local community leaders and learn about their efforts to permanently protect the area. The Castner Range Coalition and members of Congress invited Secretary Haaland to Castner Range so the Secretary could see for herself the important cultural, historical, and environmental aspects of these lands.

In response to the visit, The Wilderness Society released the following statement from Dan Hartinger, Government Relations Director:

“For decades local community members have been asking that more attention be paid to Castner Range to ensure that the history, culture and wildlife dependent on these lands are protected for future generations.

"Secretary Haaland’s visit is an important moment for her to meet with those who have been leading this effort and see the lands for herself. We hope that she will carry the community’s wishes to expand access to nature and permanently protect Castner Range through her own conversations with President Biden as he looks for ways to meet his America the Beautiful goals of conserving our lands and waters, and ensuring those who have not had a seat at the table finally have their voices heard.”
