Governor Gavin Newsom is the first to order "30 x 30" land and water conservation goal

To effectively and comprehensively address the growing climate and nature crisis, The Wilderness Society applauded the announcement today from California Gov. Newsom to conserve 30 percent of the state’s lands and ocean by 2030. The following statement is from the organization’s President Jamie Williams:

“In the wake of horrific wildfires and other climate emergencies, it has never been clearer that we must collectively take bold action to address both the climate and nature crises.  Governor Newsom’s Executive Order to establish a goal to protect 30% of California’s lands and waters by 2030 is a major step forward that recognizes that protecting California’s natural environment is directly related to the health of the state’s growing communities and the future its residents deserve. We commend this leadership and look forward to working with Governor Newsom and other visionary leaders to build the momentum for achieving better stewardship for land, water and air that will sustain us and our children for a bright future.”
