Matt serves as one of our Alaska State Senior Managers.  He was born in Ketchikan, Alaska and has always considered the Tongass home. He studied environmental and social movements at Sterling College in Vermont, where he first learned to apply ecological principles of change and adaptation to human systems. After college he worked in behavioral health with Alaskan teenagers for 6 years, doing everything from wilderness therapy to running food trucks for youth employment training.

In 2020, Matt was inspired by friends who attended the first Alaskan Just Transition Summit to switch careers into conservation. As he’s shared, “The Just Transition model was the first time he felt connected to a truly holistic approach to the ecological and social transitions required by climate change.” For over 3 years he worked on Alaskan and federal climate change policy with the Southeast Alaska Conservation Council.

When he's not trying to create the ecological conditions for a more just and sustainable future, you might find Matt meditating or doing yoga, cooking something from scratch, or playing outside.
