Jess joined The Wilderness Society in 2023 and serves as Senior Conservation Specialist for the Southern Appalachian region.

Before joining The Wilderness Society, he served as Executive Director and Forest Ecologist for Georgia ForestWatch, promoting nature-based management of the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest.  His advocacy is built on experience researching tree growth at species’ range margins, the development of forests along rivers, and old-growth forests.

Jess grew up in metro Atlanta, and holds a M.S. in ecology from SUNY-College of Environmental Science and Forestry. During his personal time, he enjoys traveling with his wife and exploring forests for big trees and new populations of rare species.
