Bill joined The Wilderness Society in January 2023 as the Montana State Director.

Bill comes to TWS from the Bob Marshall Wilderness Foundation where he has served as Executive Director for the last four years. Bill is also the founder and former Executive Director of Southern Appalachian Wilderness Stewards (SAWS), which he started during a prior term with TWS.

Bill and his wife Laura collaborate quite a bit to promote the values of our public lands through their shared passion for photography and her work with the Crown of the Continent Geo-Tourism Council and her role on the Great Old Broads for Wilderness Board. Prior to his work in public lands, Bill worked in college athletics, including time as broadcaster for college football and basketball. Bill is passionate about the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex (simply known as "The Bob" in Montana) and in particular loves the upper reaches of the South Fork of  the Flathead River and spending time at Big Prairie, a remote Guard Station in the heart of it all.
