A large raptor population and eight miles of the Rio Grande highlight this roadless area. Raptors are attracted to this area in scores, due to the cliffs and adjacent food source from the river. Among them hawks, falcons and eagles. As many as 300 bald eagles have been spotted wintering in the vicinity. Ten miles east of Antonito and bordering New Mexico, this 10,866-acre area provides primitive recreation and solitude.
