Forty miles northwest of Cortez, The Mares Tail Canyon area contains high concentration of Anasazi sites. The sites include round towers, Hovenweep towers, pit houses, pueblos, cliff dwellings, pottery shards, agricultural sites and a wide variety of pictographs and petroglyphs. An abundance of wildlife also calls this 4,806-acre roadless area home, including large species such as deer, mountain lion, and black bear. Bird species such as golden eagle, migratory bald eagles and the endangered peregrine falcon frequent this area. These canyons are also considered to have the most abundant and diverse reptile and amphibian populations in Colorado.
