Located 25 miles northwest of Cortez, Cross Canyon is a beautiful area of cottonwoods, sagebrush and piñon-juniper. The Anasazi, who inhabited the area between A.D. 450 and 1300, have left clues to their presence here, in the form of ruins and artifacts. Archeological sites are concentrated in numbers of 40 to 60 per square mile throughout this 25,876-acre area. Although a complete inventory has not yet been done, many sites are eligible for placement on the National Register of Historic Places.
