December 4, 2008 - The Wilderness Society has generated some ink and electrons by responding to a federal judge’s decision that potentially exposes 13.6 million acres of roadless forests in 29 states to exploitation. Most recently, “The Hill”, a highly influential publication in Washington, DC, asked us to write a post on its blog to explain what the ruling means to us and what we think should happen next. more

Bush serves helping of Desolation Canyon, other Utah lands to oil and gas

November 26, 2008 - Some of Utah’s most beloved wild lands will be offered up to the oil and gas industry in December, courtesy of an administration that appears bent on ignoring the wishes of the public. On Election Day, the Utah office of the Bureau of Land Management, or BLM — a division of the Bush administration’s Department of Interior — announced that a Dec. 19 lease sale of state lands would include oil and gas leases near the beloved Arches and Canyonlands national parks, along with eastern Utah's Dinosaur National Monument. more

How to Protect Roadless Areas? Wilderness Society tells advisory committee that 2001 rule is key

November 24, 2008 - WASHINGTON – An advisory committee meeting Nov. 18-19, agreed to make two key recommendations to Colorado and federal government agencies regarding Colorado’s attempts to establish its own roadless rule, which would weaken the 2001 national rule that currently protects roadless forests in most of the rest of the country. more
