Helping Communities Plan for Fire

Some 85 percent of the land around western communities with the highest fire risk is privately or state owned. yet the bulk of federal funds for wildfire preparation is spent on federal lands.

Our mapping project helps communities see where the greatest areas of risk are, so communities can prioritize accordingly. We are also collaborating with community residents and local stakeholders to ensure that scarce federal funds for fuel reduction are spent where they are needed most—protecting homes and communities within the Community Fire Planning Zone (CFPZ).

Click on a state below for a detailed view of that state's Community Fire Planning Zone.
