Louisiana

The Delta State

The Mississippi River makes its last stop in Louisiana before emptying into the Gulf of Mexico near New Orleans. The Mississippi and its rich delta, along with the Sabine, Pearl and Atchafalaya Rivers serve as important life-giving forces to wildlife and wildlands within the state.

Planning for Our Refuges' Future
With its miles of wetlands and many wildlife refuges, Louisiana is a birder's paradise. The common and uncommon can be spied here: Egrets, herons, the roseate spoonbill, green winged teals and many more. For the first time ever, Louisiana's national wildlife refuges are getting management plans. Refuge managers are producing plans for how they will manage - and protect - our refuges in coming years. Thanks to the Refuge Improvement and Management Act of 1997, first envisioned by The Wilderness Society, we all can have a say in how our Refuges are managed. Get involved!
