On July 22, 2004, Congressman John Dingell (D-MI) introduced House Resolution 746 to honor the 40th Anniversary of the Wilderness Act. Rep. Dingell is the only sitting House member who was in office at the time of passage of the Wilderness Act. Dingell actively worked to ensure the measure was approved in 1964. Twelve other House members from both sides of the aisle signed on as original co-sponsors of the resolution commemorating the measure that created the National Wilderness Preservation System and protected the first nine million acres of America’s public wilderness. The House resolution is a companion to the Senate resolution introduced last month by Senator Russ Feingold (D-WI), and cosponsored by eight Republicans and three Democrats.
Original cosponsors of the Wilderness resolution in the House are Representatives include Charlie Bass (R-NH), Sherwood Boehlert (R-NY), Mike Castle (R-DE), Wayne Gilchrest (R-MD), Jim Greenwood (R-PA), Raul Grijalva (D-AZ), George Miller (D-CA), Nick Rahall (D-WV), Chris Shays (R-CT), Mark Udall (D-CO), Tom Udall (D-NM), and Curt Weldon (R-PA).
