On Thursday, December 1, 2005, President George W. Bush signed into law H.R. 539, the "Caribbean National Forest Act," which designates 10,000 acres of National Forest System land in Puerto Rico as the "El Toro Wilderness."
On November 18, 2005, the White Mountain National Forest released its final revised Forest Plan, which will govern management on the National Forest for the next 10-15 years. The final plan recommends expansion of the existing Sandwich Wilderness and the addition of a new Wilderness in the Wild River area, for a total of 34,500 acres of new wilderness recommendations.
On Tuesday, November 29, 2005, Reps. Earl Blumenauer (D-OR) and Greg Walden (R-OR) announced a plan to provide additional protections – including additional wilderness designation -- to Oregon’s Mount Hood area.
