40th Anniversary of the Wilderness Act Special!

"In order to assure that an increasing population, accompanied by expanding settlement and growing mechanization, does not occupy and modify all areas within the United States and its possessions, leaving no lands designated for preservation and protection in their natural condition, it is herby declared to be the policy of the Congress to secure for the American people of present and future generations the benefits of an enduring resource of wilderness."
- The Wilderness Act, Section 2 (a).

On this day 40 years ago, President Lyndon Johnson signed the Wilderness Act into law. The measure which is one of our country's hallmark conservation laws, created the National Wilderness Preservation System, which showcases and protects in perpetuity our nation's natural crown jewels. We salute all those who worked tirelessly to see the Wilderness Act passed as well as the thousands of volunteers, organizations and decision makers who have worked over the last forty years and will continue to work in the future to use the Wilderness Act to provide Americans with an "enduring resource of wilderness."
