As wilderness advocates get ready to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the signing of the Wilderness Act on September 3, Congress is getting ready to return to Washington after its month long August recess. With only a few weeks left in the current Congress, there is sure to be a flurry of end-of-session activity on a number of pending wilderness bills and there may still be new bills introduced in the closing weeks of the 108th Congress. For those keeping score at home, no wilderness bills have yet to pass both the House and Senate and President Bush has not signed a wilderness bill into law since 2002. Wilderness advocates in Washington, New Mexico, California, Idaho, and elsewhere are hoping that will change in the coming weeks.
