WILDALERT: Arctic Refuge Update (11/04/2005)
In a close vote along mostly party lines on Nov. 3rd, the Senate approved the 2006 Budget Reconciliation bill, which would, among other things, open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska to oil development.  The focus next turns to the House, where a significant number of Republicans are outspoken in their opposition to Arctic Refuge drilling in the Budget Bill, thereby casting serious doubt on whether a bill with Arctic drilling in it can pass the House at all.

WILDALERT: Ask Your Members of Congress to Support Funding to Protect Wild, Natural Lands (05/02/2005)
We have the mechanism to preserve some of the most beautiful and vulnerable places here and elsewhere in the country from degradation and development. But Congress must provide monies through the Land & Water Conservation Fund and Forest Legacy program for these specific places to make that happen. Please contact your Members of Congress today and ask them to request a specific funding "earmark" for these critical projects.

WILDALERT: Congress Approves Budget Conference Report (04/29/2005)
In two close votes on April 28, 2005, the House and Senate approved a Budget Conference Report that paves the way for a bill that could open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil drilling. This campaign is far from over, though.  Here's how you can help.

WILDALERT: Congress Closing in on Final Land Acquisition Budgets (07/18/2005)
Sometime within the next two weeks, we expect the House and Senate to work out final budget numbers for the Interior Appropriations bill for the next fiscal year. Within that budget will be funding for two very important land protection programs: the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) and Forest Legacy.

WILDALERT: Great News--House Removes Arctic Refuge Drilling (11/10/2005)
The House Rules Committee has removed from the House Budget Reconciliation bill the provision that would have opened the Arctic Refuge to development. The provision that would have made it easier to drill for oil and gas in coastal areas currently off limits to development was also removed.

WILDALERT: House Bill Proposes Savage Cuts in Land Protection Funding (05/16/2005)
The House of Representatives this week will take up the Interior Appropriations bill that funds our land management agencies. For the first time ever, the Congress proposes to eliminate funding for all new land acquisitions in Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) and to slash funding for the Forest Legacy program. But in a stark display of twisted priorities, the bill would continue massive subsidies for road-building and logging on our largest national forest, the Tongass in Alaska.

We need your help to keep a steady drumbeat of messages before Congress. This cartoon pretty much says it all. Will you please forward this to at least five friends, family, or coworkers urging them take action as well?

WILDALERT: Renewed Arctic Refuge Battle in Congress (03/14/2006)

WILDALERT: Special Earth Day Thank You to an Arctic Refuge Hero (04/22/2005)
While the energy bill, including an Arctic Refuge drilling provision, passed the House of Representatives on Thursday, more Representatives voted against Arctic Refuge drilling than in a similar vote in 2003. Meanwhile, Congressional negotiators are deciding whether to include language in the final Budget Resolution that would pave the way for drilling.

Budget Overview: Why A New Direction for Wildfire Management is Necessary (05/15/2007)
The cost of putting out all fires has skyrocketed in recent years. In four of the last seven years, suppression costs have exceeded $1 billion. These escalating costs threaten to consume the majority of the Forest Service's discretionary budget, leaving them very little money to do anything else. Climate predictions, changing demographics and budget realities require a new way of thinking.

Bush Budget Theatens America's Environmental Security (02/18/2005)
Joint Environmental Backgrounder: Securing environmental protection in America is critical to our nation’s well-being. While the administration proposes reducing domestic discretionary spending for all federal programs (excluding defense and homeland security) by less than one percent, environmental funding is targeted for a punishing 10.4 percent cut.

Facts About FY 2008 Wildfire Appropriations (03/26/2007)
Over the last five years, over $14 billion has been appropriated to the National Fire Plan (NFP). During this time of large federal deficits and increasing pressure to re-examine federal budget priorities, the question must be asked whether these taxpayer dollars have promoted safer communities and more resilient ecosystems.

Facts about the BLM's Proposed Land Sale (02/27/2006)
The Bush Administration has proposed that Federal Land Transaction and Facilitation Act (FLTFA) be amended to allocate 70% of BLM land sale receipts for “deficit reduction” rather than for the purchase of private lands for incorporation into National Parks, National Forests, and BLM lands. The Bush Administration has proposed that the BLM raise $351 million over the next ten years from land sales authorized under FLTFA to “reduce the federal deficit,” rather than to acquire inholdings within National Parks, National Monuments, national forests, and BLM conservation areas as present law provides.

Study after study consistently proves that wildlife has been harmed by development on the North Slope of Alaska. In 2003, the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) released a study that documented major cumulative impacts of oil development on wildlife, wilderness, and Native American cultures across an extensive area of the North Slope.

Factsheet: The Wildland Fire Budget -- The Reality Behind the Rhetoric. (05/02/2006)
The President’s proposed FY07 budget for wildland fire plans to short-cut many assistance programs that invest our scarce resources where they are most urgently needed -- in and around communities. These cuts come despite predictions that this could be a very active fire season and they ultimately send the message that the goal of safer communities is not a top priority. Members of Congress have questioned these cuts at recent hearings and the Administration has defended them with the rationale that they reduce overhead and duplication and other programs can take up the slack. But the reality is much different.

Some proponents of oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge have indicated that they may attempt to move their proposal as part of the federal budget process. Handbooks & Guides
Conservation Capital: Sources of Private Funding for Land Conservation (12/23/2004)
Public funding for land conservation is limited, and often requires matches from other sources. This guide describes private funding options such as: individual and foundation donations, government incentives that encourage those donations, emerging programs such as New Markets Tax Credits and Community Forestry Bonds, raising funds through forest-based revenues, partnering with forest investors, and reducing conservation costs by purchasing partial rights to land.

Community Fire Assistance Budget Significantly Reduced in FY2009 (04/01/2008)
While fire management is often perceived as a federal issue, fires do not respect jurisdictional lines. Wildland fire management must occur at the landscape scale, with federal agencies partnering with states and communities, and scarce resources must be spent where they are needed most.

Facts About FY 2009 Wildfire Budget (04/01/2008)

Wildfire Suppression Budget Continues to Escalate; Solution is needed (04/01/2008)
Federal fire suppression costs have increased significantly in recent years, exceeding $1 billion in five of the last seven years. As suppression activities continue to increase, so does the suppression budget since it is based on a 10-year rolling average. Because the agencies’ budgets are essentially flat year to year, to off-set these increases funding for critical programs has been significantly reduced and more and more of the land management agencies’ budgets are being used for wildland fire management.

Wilderness Society Comments on Land Sales Proposal (04/07/2006)
Comments from The Wilderness Society submitted to the U.S. Forest Service on the Secure Rural Schools Land Sales Initiative. The Wilderness Society strongly opposes the sale of national forest lands that the Administration has proposed in the Secure Rural Schools Land Sales Initiative. We also oppose the Administration's recently proposed legislation -- the National Forest Land Conveyance for Rural Communities Act -- that would give the Forest Service unprecedented and unwarranted statutory authority to carry out the land sales.
