The Wilderness Society is a national, nonprofit conservation group dedicated to preserving wilderness and wildlife and protecting America’s prime forests, parks, rivers, deserts, and shorelines.

The intern for TWS’ National Landscape Conservation System (NLCS) Campaign will assist with a variety of efforts to protect and restore the 26 million acres of special BLM lands that have a conservation mandate (see http://www.discovernlcs.org). Campaign goals include increasing appropriations for the System, building support and enthusiasm for the System within the BLM, educating the public about the System’s values, and improving the management plans which the BLM is drafting for NLCS’s areas, such as National Monuments.

Intern projects could include:

• Researching and writing about the cultural, educational, scientific, and social benefits of selected BLM National Monuments, Conservation Areas, trails, and wilderness Identifying “best practice” management approaches and ideas from NLCS National Monuments and Conservation Areas through interviews with nonprofit groups and with the BLM
• Writing communications materials, including fact sheets and website materials
• Maintaining a database of information on congressional offices targeted as potential champions for the NLCS
• Helping organize and generate publicity for a weekend of volunteer conservation work in National Monuments
• Taking notes during weekly coalition meetings and hearings on the Hill, and other administrative work
